Wilkie Bits

For Mild Leverage, Try a Wilkie Bit

A bit designed to provide mild leverage are the Wilkie bits, otherwise known as bevel bits. A Wilkie bits design allows a more straight line from rider hand to horses mouth, preserving directional control when compared to more aggressive leverage bits. These bits are built out of two pieces – the cheek pieces and the mouthpiece. The cheek pieces are where the magic happens. The cheeks are round with two smaller, semicircles inside. Your bridle’s cheek pieces connect to one of the two inner, semicircles. Your reins attach to the adjacent semicircle. When activated, the Wilkie action increases pressure on the mouthpiece. The mouthpiece of the Wilkie varies across models but are all basic snaffles. We carry four different mouth pieces in our collection: steel with a copper lozenge, steel with a jointed mouth and no lozenge, sweet iron with raised ribs and a copper lozenge and finally, the sweet iron without ribs also with a copper lozenge.
