Curb Bits - Leverage Bits

Curb bits work by leverage where one ounce of rein aid may translate to two or more ounces of pressure on the horse. They range in severity, starting with the Kimberwicke and working up to a multi ring gag bit. Curb bits like other bits come in many different materials, rings and mouthpieces. Besides Kimberwicke bits, curb bits should be used by more experienced riders to avoid injuring the horses sensitive mouth. Fitting a curb bit requires measuring your horses mouth first. The bit should have 1/4 inch on each side of the horses mouth. A bit that is too narrow will pinch the lips and cause sores. Curb bits that are too wide rock and apply pressure unevenly on the bars of the mouth, possibly causing the horse to tilt his head. Curb bits should rest at or near the corners of the mouth and not create the “wrinkle” that is usually found when fitting a snaffle.
