Product Description

Sheepskin Girth Cover, Non-Synthetic Merino

Sheepskin Girth Covers are made of genuine Merino wool by Christ Lammfelle in Germany. This fleece girth cover turns your regular neoprene or leather girth into a secure, moisture-wicking girth that will reduce rubs.

  • Genuine Merino Wool (non-synthetic)
  • Actual sheepskin girth cover – not just the pile pasted onto a cotton base
  • Moisture-wicking – moves sweat away from girth, reducing chafing
  • Secure and high resistance to pilling (bunching up of the fleece)
  • Also super soft
  • Machine washable when you use a sheepskin friendly detergent like MELP

Colors may vary slightly from images. The natural, unbleached sheepskin girth cover could turn out more sun bleached than pictured (closer to white). The grey sheepskin girth cover is more accurately described as “anthracite” – not exactly black and not exactly grey. Chris Lammfelle adds the anthracite color to the natural, unbleached sheepskin during production.

Stretching to Reduce Girth Rubs

Many of our customers purchase our sheepskin girth covers to help reduce girth rubs in the summer and during intense training. Through the grapevine, we have heard that stretching the horses front legs helps to reduce rubs as well. The theory is that it will pull the excess skin around the elbow tight, allowing the girth to settle in a better position. This might not reduce the need for a sheepskin girth cover but it might help. If you’re an experienced 3-day rider, you probably have a stretching routine but if you want some instructions, check out this page on equine stretches.

Care For Fleece Girths, Pads, and your Sheepskin Girth Sleeve

For all non-synthetic Merino wool, the manufacturing company suggests that you only use sheepskin/wool safe detergents. Or, for inexpensive washing, try Woolite. But, for a more high-end wool, you should use MELP to keep your fleece girths and other sheepskin products from falling apart. Mattes requires the use of MELP for the preservation of product warranty.

Sheepskin Girth Cover Dressage Use, Showjumping and Cross Country

Unlike other disciplines, Eventers don’t have many regulations on what gear you can use for different phases. This product is for all three phases including as a dressage girth cover.
