Mattes Crescent Girth

The Mattes Crescent Girth helps fit horses with a narrow front end or a short backed horse that has little room for the girth. The Mattes Crescent Girth gives adequate elbow clearance but is only “slightly” shaped. The crescent is not as prominent as it is with other brands but helps with fitting a horse with a sprung rib and short back (many TB event horses).

Available for immediate shipping in short girth sizes (22in – 30in) if you order black on black (black sheepskin, black twill) or in sizes 26 – 28 if you order brown / brown. Also available as a Long girth (50in – 52in). Other sizes and color combinations are available for no additional cost but will take around 6 to 8 weeks for delivery. The Mattes crescent girth comes with a removable sheepskin cover that requires a wool-safe detergent to wash like MELP.

Crescent Girth Helps Reduce Rubbing

If you’re looking for an anatomic dressage girth for a horse with a combination of a short back and wide ribcage, causing your current so called “comfort” dressage girth to slide forward into the elbow, the Mattes Crescent Girth could be for you. The crescent shape keeps the it from being pushed forward and leaves room for the elbows. The shape also helps to eliminate galling – which is a fancy way to describe what is typically known as “rubbing the crap out of the girth area”.

Fitting Your Mattes Girth

We measured what Mattes considers a 32″ crescent girth a couple different ways and got a couple different measurements. You can use the Mattes short girth as a dressage girth, stadium, or cross country girth – as long as you have long billets, it will work for you. Caring For Your Mattes Sheepskin Girth

EA Mattes suggests using their MELP detergent on all their pads and fleece girths. The removable sheepskin is washer safe in cold water on gentle. You can also use a bucket at the barn. Gently pull back to the correct shape and lay flat to dry. Don’t expose to direct sunlight or dry using a heater / dryer. Never use chlorine bleach unless you want to ruin your gear.
