Full Cheek Snaffle Keepers

Full cheek snaffle keepers are a piece of safety equipment/bit positioning tool that holds in place the cheek bars of a full cheek bit. The full cheek bit has a design to sit in the horse’s mouth at a particular angle. To assist the bit in sitting at the correct angle, the full cheek must also have bit keepers. In their role as safety equipment, full cheek snaffle keepers keep the full cheek secure. The keepers prevent the cheek bars from catching on something. Full cheek snaffle bit keepers also help prevent the bit from rattling around. Overall, $4 is well worth it if your full cheek snaffle has no keepers included.

Do You Need Full Cheek Snaffle Keepers?

Why not? They’re only $4. Yes, you may have heard of some trainer saying you don’t need them. Yes, you may have heard some trainer saying that you do need them. Envision a situation where you don’t have them… your horse reaches around to bite at you or at a fly or at whatever and gets the bar of the snaffle caught on your stirrup leather or something else – your bootlace. Now, you two are connected foot to mouth – not where you want to be. Will this happen? Maybe, probably not but $4… for $4 you can avoid this situation. Just be a good Pony Clubber and use keepers (Read USPC Manual of Horsemanship “D” Level, pages 219-228. 1.).

In a pinch… if you find yourself without a set of full cheek snaffle keepers, try a using a few braiding bands.
