Rubber Bit Guard

Rubber bit guard 2 pack. These don’t have velcro for easy on and therefore easy off. As riders, we have lost too many of that style of bit guard to waste our customers’ money on them. Try leaving these bit guards in the sun or hot water before you put them on. It makes the process somewhat easier. If your horse’s mouth continues to get pinched, make sure you’re using the right size bit, try some Vaseline, or maybe even an Eggbutt bit.

Bit Guard Use

Rubber bit guard is generally used for the purpose of preventing the sensitive corners of a horse’s mouth from being pinched by the bit. Most commonly, bit guards are used with O-ring bits, because the mouthpiece on such a bit is not attached to the rings, but rather can move freely around on them. This increases the chances of pinching. Bit guards should also be used on gag bits – any type of bit that allows the mouthpiece to slide. For many horses, uncomfortable and even painful pinching at the corners of the mouth can significantly affect behavior or performance negatively. If pinching from the bit continues without the use of a trusty bit guard it can cause some nasty sores.

Bit guards are also used to help prevent some bits from sliding through a horse’s mouth. If one rein has enough pressure applied, which can accidentally happen on the cross country course, the ring on the other side of the bit can end up in your horse’s mouth. Not a good situation!

Remember that each bit guard will take up a little bit of space on both sides of the horse’s mouth. So, if your bit fits perfectly now it may be a little small with a bit guard added on each side. Then the rubber of the guards will cause rubbing issues on the lips! Always make sure you are using the correct size bit with bit guards. This is so that your horse stays comfortable (and you stay safe)!
